want to start out with a little story.

So last

last week on Tuesday,

I was meeting my friend for happy hour

for a glass of wine and some

cheese board. Yay!

Good, good times.

So anyway,

she comes in a few minutes late.

She is hurrying from a work meeting

and she's got a text from work

and she's like a little bit in a frazzle.

And she tells me this story,

and I'm sure many of you,

if you're in health care, can relate.

But really, customer service,

anything where you deal with people.

So she, my friend, is a nurse

and she is like an administrative nurse,
00:01:57:09 - 00:01:58:20
actually do direct patient care,
00:01:58:20 - 00:02:02:05
but she's a chief operating officer
00:02:02:14 - 00:02:06:00
and she was out on a patient
00:02:06:00 - 00:02:07:04
consultation
00:02:07:04 - 00:02:09:19
with the chief medical officer
00:02:09:19 - 00:02:13:01
and a new hire, a nurse practitioner.
00:02:13:08 - 00:02:13:22
So the reason
00:02:13:22 - 00:02:14:21
all three of these people
00:02:14:21 - 00:02:16:20
are out together, which is not usual,
00:02:16:20 - 00:02:19:10
is because they were training this person
00:02:19:10 - 00:02:20:24
and wanted to make sure
00:02:20:24 - 00:02:23:21
that the new person knew exactly
00:02:23:21 - 00:02:25:01
how the company did things.
00:02:25:01 - 00:02:27:24
So like sort of top of the line training.
00:02:27:24 - 00:02:30:01
So they go into a patient's home.
00:02:30:01 - 00:02:31:02
They've got their
00:02:31:02 - 00:02:31:20
they're all sort of
00:02:31:20 - 00:02:35:07
dressed the same and not quite a uniform,
00:02:35:14 - 00:02:37:07
but they all have nametags on that
00:02:37:07 - 00:02:38:01
say their name
00:02:38:01 - 00:02:39:13
and the name of the company
00:02:39:13 - 00:02:41:17
and they introduce themselves
00:02:41:17 - 00:02:43:05
and have a long
00:02:43:05 - 00:02:44:19
my friend
00:02:44:19 - 00:02:46:02
has a long conversation
00:02:46:02 - 00:02:48:24
with the daughter of the patient about
00:02:51:18 - 00:02:54:15
they've just been to Italy and, you know,
00:02:54:15 - 00:02:55:17
the daughter is like,
00:02:55:17 - 00:02:57:13
oh, Italy is my happy place and,
00:02:57:13 - 00:02:59:22
you know, have a real good connection,
00:02:59:22 - 00:03:02:12
have a full visit and everyone's
00:03:02:12 - 00:03:03:03
hunky dory.
00:03:03:03 - 00:03:07:10
Satisfied, the friend gets in the car,
00:03:07:14 - 00:03:09:03
comes home,
00:03:09:03 - 00:03:10:23
which is like an hour and a half drive.
00:03:10:23 - 00:03:13:23
And by the time she has gotten to meet me
00:03:14:01 - 00:03:16:08
for the end of the day for happy hour,
00:03:16:08 - 00:03:19:08
she's gotten a phone call that the
00:03:19:16 - 00:03:20:10
people have called
00:03:20:10 - 00:03:20:22
the complain,
00:03:20:22 - 00:03:22:14
the daughter has called complain
00:03:22:14 - 00:03:24:15
to the company.
00:03:24:15 - 00:03:27:09
And the complaint is that three strangers
00:03:27:09 - 00:03:28:20
showed up
00:03:28:20 - 00:03:31:19
and didn't introduce themselves,
00:03:31:19 - 00:03:33:12
didn't know why they were here,
00:03:33:12 - 00:03:36:12
and nobody had nametags on.
00:03:36:19 - 00:03:38:19
So, like, of course, my friend, like,
00:03:38:19 - 00:03:39:24
her head won't explode
00:03:39:24 - 00:03:41:04
because this is sort of the
00:03:41:04 - 00:03:42:15
opposite of what happened.

And she proceeded to tell me
00:03:46:02 - 00:03:47:22
about how they connected over Italy
00:03:47:22 - 00:03:49:23
and the whole like the whole nine yards.
00:03:49:23 - 00:03:51:12
And she's like, Why?
00:03:51:12 - 00:03:53:07
Like why are people like this?
00:03:53:07 - 00:03:54:19
Like what?
00:03:54:19 - 00:03:57:06
What is what happened?

And I was like, Oh, I know the answer.
00:04:01:02 - 00:04:01:24
Like, I really do.
00:04:01:24 - 00:04:02:22
I know the answer to this.

And she's like, What?
00:04:03:13 - 00:04:06:12
I'm like, People are trifling.

It's just like,
00:04:07:05 - 00:04:08:13
Oh, yeah, I'm like, You know
00:04:08:13 - 00:04:11:02
the answer is that people are trifling.
00:04:11:02 - 00:04:12:15
They don't make sense.

Like,

who knows exactly what happened
00:04:14:19 - 00:04:16:14
between the time you left a door
00:04:16:14 - 00:04:18:22
and they did this complaint phone call.

My guess
00:04:19:16 - 00:04:21:17
is that some other family came in
00:04:21:17 - 00:04:23:19
and said, What are you guys doing?
00:04:23:19 - 00:04:24:09
You know,
00:04:24:09 - 00:04:25:01
we got Betty
00:04:25:01 - 00:04:26:03
Sue's da da da
00:04:26:03 - 00:04:26:09
you know,
00:04:26:09 - 00:04:27:12
got them off their rocker
00:04:27:12 - 00:04:29:01
and got all riled up and called.
00:04:29:01 - 00:04:32:01
But I have no idea. Really.

The answer is people are trifling.
00:04:34:06 - 00:04:35:01
And by trifling
00:04:35:01 - 00:04:36:15
I mean sort of aggravating.
00:04:36:15 - 00:04:38:07
They do things that don't make sense.
00:04:38:07 - 00:04:39:06
They don't make sense
00:04:39:06 - 00:04:40:17
for their own interest,
00:04:40:17 - 00:04:41:18
for your interests.
00:04:41:18 - 00:04:43:09
They want to fight and quarrel.
00:04:44:22 - 00:04:47:01
So people are trifling
00:04:47:01 - 00:04:49:11
and I just find
00:04:49:11 - 00:04:51:23
that is a super useful way
00:04:51:23 - 00:04:55:01
for me to think about many of the, like,
00:04:56:04 - 00:04:58:19
nonsensical things that people do
00:04:58:19 - 00:04:59:10
and say
00:04:59:10 - 00:05:02:10
in the course of moving through life.
00:05:02:18 - 00:05:05:18
So I am not alone in this
00:05:06:08 - 00:05:08:09
assessment of humanity.
00:05:08:09 - 00:05:10:01
So I'm sure many of you
00:05:10:01 - 00:05:12:02
have heard of Marcus Aurelius.
00:05:12:02 - 00:05:15:21
He is a famous Roman emperor.
00:05:15:24 - 00:05:17:17
Like 2000 years ago,
00:05:17:17 - 00:05:19:06
but in my mind
00:05:19:06 - 00:05:20:12
he's to me
00:05:20:12 - 00:05:22:20
most famous for he's got
00:05:22:20 - 00:05:24:07
a bunch of writings
00:05:24:07 - 00:05:25:20
and there's they're collected
00:05:25:20 - 00:05:27:09
in a book called Meditations.
00:05:27:09 - 00:05:28:18
And I joked to myself
00:05:28:18 - 00:05:30:04
that he's the original life coach.
00:05:30:04 - 00:05:30:14
So he's
00:05:30:14 - 00:05:34:20
got all these like he's always trying.
00:05:34:21 - 00:05:36:24
He's sort of serious dude,
00:05:36:24 - 00:05:38:16
like sort of trying to coach himself
00:05:38:16 - 00:05:41:05
to improve and understand the world.
00:05:41:05 - 00:05:43:02
But here's one of my favorites.
00:05:43:02 - 00:05:45:00
So he says,
00:05:45:00 - 00:05:46:20
when you wake up in the morning,
00:05:46:20 - 00:05:48:09
tell yourself,
00:05:48:09 - 00:05:49:14
the people I deal with
00:05:49:14 - 00:05:52:17
today will be meddling, ungrateful,
00:05:52:23 - 00:05:56:10
arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly.
00:05:57:18 - 00:05:58:12
Okay.
00:05:58:12 - 00:05:58:21
Right.
00:05:58:21 - 00:06:01:21
So here's your shortcut for that is
00:06:02:12 - 00:06:04:09
people are trifling.
00:06:04:09 - 00:06:07:09
So tell yourself, people are trifling.
00:06:08:01 - 00:06:12:06
I find it liberating and not aggravating.
00:06:12:19 - 00:06:16:06
So this is meant to be helpful to you.

It's not meant to be dismissive and mean.
00:06:19:02 - 00:06:20:13
So if you're saying people are trifling
00:06:20:13 - 00:06:21:16
and you're feeling mean,
00:06:21:16 - 00:06:23:05
that's not the way this is intended.
00:06:23:05 - 00:06:24:08
It is intended to give you
00:06:24:08 - 00:06:25:14
a little bit of lightness,
00:06:25:14 - 00:06:27:20
with the frustrations of the world.
00:06:27:20 - 00:06:30:20
So then Marcus goes on to say,
00:06:32:02 - 00:06:34:14
basically it's because they don't
00:06:34:14 - 00:06:35:22
know good from evil
00:06:35:22 - 00:06:37:22
and he has seen both good and evil.
00:06:37:22 - 00:06:40:22
But he also goes on to say that
00:06:41:06 - 00:06:42:10
he understands that
00:06:42:10 - 00:06:45:10
their nature is related to his own,
00:06:45:15 - 00:06:48:00
and we are born to work together
00:06:48:00 - 00:06:50:08
like hands and feet to obstruct
00:06:50:08 - 00:06:50:19
each other
00:06:50:19 - 00:06:52:06
is unnatural to feel anger
00:06:52:06 - 00:06:53:24
at someone, to turn your back on him.
00:06:53:24 - 00:06:55:01
These are unnatural.
00:06:56:05 - 00:06:56:15
And so
00:06:56:15 - 00:06:59:15
what I take from that is
00:06:59:19 - 00:07:01:05
a couple things.
00:07:01:05 - 00:07:03:01
One is
00:07:03:01 - 00:07:04:24
we are trifling too
00:07:04:24 - 00:07:07:06
and I wholeheartedly believe this.
00:07:07:06 - 00:07:09:03
You may not think you're trifling,
00:07:09:03 - 00:07:11:04
but let me tell you, you're trifling
00:07:11:04 - 00:07:14:01
to somebody sometimes.
00:07:14:01 - 00:07:15:16
So some of the times that I think

we can be trfiling
00:07:17:04 - 00:07:18:14
doctors, a lot of times
00:07:18:14 - 00:07:21:06
they want to be right.
00:07:21:06 - 00:07:22:00
They'd rather be
00:07:22:00 - 00:07:25:00
right than come to a consensus.
00:07:25:00 - 00:07:27:04
Sometimes passive aggressive.
00:07:27:04 - 00:07:28:17
We pretend to know more than we do.
00:07:28:17 - 00:07:30:14
Sometimes
00:07:30:14 - 00:07:32:17
we make our administrators harass
00:07:32:17 - 00:07:35:13
us for paperwork, for queries.
00:07:35:13 - 00:07:38:13
I used to be so trifling about billing.
00:07:39:07 - 00:07:40:05
I don't know why.
00:07:40:05 - 00:07:42:00
Like totally didn't make sense,
00:07:42:00 - 00:07:44:00
even to my own detriment.
00:07:44:00 - 00:07:45:14
Like it costs me money
00:07:45:14 - 00:07:46:18
to drag my feet on billing
00:07:46:18 - 00:07:49:03
and I did it anyway. Totally trifling,
00:07:50:16 - 00:07:52:11
not making any sense.
00:07:52:11 - 00:07:53:02
I just
00:07:53:02 - 00:07:53:24
do want to say now
00:07:53:24 - 00:07:55:05
I do my billing on time
00:07:55:05 - 00:07:57:05
because there's a wonderful person
00:07:57:05 - 00:07:57:23
on the other end
00:07:57:23 - 00:07:58:20
who's waiting for it
00:07:58:20 - 00:08:00:24
to make the list for the next day,
00:08:00:24 - 00:08:02:07
and it's totally cured me now.

I do it on time every day
00:08:04:18 - 00:08:06:06
because I'm very motivated
00:08:06:06 - 00:08:08:07
to be a decent partner
00:08:08:07 - 00:08:10:10
and I love having the list sorted out

instead of having to do it myself.

So anyway, Marcus

basically is saying

like we it's in our nature

we're triflin’ too.

So you may not recognize us

how you're trifling,

but just when you're saying, you know,

as the start of the day

or when things come along,

people are trifling.

Just keep in mind you're trifling too.

And the other thing he's saying

She was seeing a very elderly person

who had been admitted

to the hospital for very soft reason,

to basically get some outpatient

studies done

because the logistic were proving hard.

Well, she goes to see this

little lady and they have an interaction
00:09:05:22 - 00:09:07:18
about like I need my tea served,
00:09:07:18 - 00:09:09:19
which is like not how the hospital goes.
00:09:09:19 - 00:09:10:13
And, you know,
00:09:10:13 - 00:09:12:05
she's not sure she wants this test,
00:09:12:05 - 00:09:13:02
which is the whole reason
00:09:13:02 - 00:09:14:15
her doctor wanted her to the hospital
00:09:14:15 - 00:09:16:00
like this whole thing.
00:09:16:00 - 00:09:19:00
And my partner was like, feeling very
00:09:19:09 - 00:09:20:19
frustrated, sort of mad.
00:09:20:19 - 00:09:22:00
And because, like,
00:09:22:00 - 00:09:24:07
this whole thing does not make sense.
00:09:24:07 - 00:09:25:12
And I'm like, oh,
00:09:25:12 - 00:09:26:23
like, seriously good news.
00:09:26:23 - 00:09:27:24
Like, people are trifling.

Like, you don't have

to understand the whys and wherefores.

Like, this little old lady is trifling.

And what we get to do

is not get angry about it.

Not like worsen the situation by

What we get to do is decide

what our job is in that situation,

which is probably

gets to make their own decision.

Our job, you know, in our job also,

is to set boundaries

so they can be trifling.

And we get to come in, be very clear

what our job is

and medical decision making, explaining

to the best of our abilities

what the situation is, you know,

whatever or,

you know,

if you're not in the medical field,

whatever your job is like,

you get to decide

your gunna show up and do your job.

People are being trifling

and then you get to set boundaries

so you don't have to keep explaining.

You don't have to bend yourself
00:10:38:10 - 00:10:39:21
into a pretzel
00:10:39:21 - 00:10:42:12
to keep trifling people
00:10:42:12 - 00:10:43:10
from being trifling.

And it makes

moving through the world

and especially moving

through the hospital

a little lighter and easier.
